There is a way to borrow money from your IRA. Technically you can’t and the IRS doesn’t seem to like it when you do, but there is still a loophole that will let you do it. Legally you can’t borrow money from your IRA. Legally you can’t borrow money against your IRA. However, it is legal to roll your ira over from one account into another. And there is a period of time where you can move that money. This period of time can basically act as a short term loan.

Now here is the downside. If you borrow from your IRA and don’t pay it back in time, you’ll have to pay taxes on that money. Worse still, you’ll have to pay a 10% penalty as well.

If you are dealing with a substantial amount of money, it may push you into a hire tax bracket so you’ll be paying at the top rate, plus the 10% additional fee.

Borrowing money like this is not recommended. It is good to know it is possible, but still is something you should avoid if you can. The risks are very great if you are some how unable to pay the money back.

You capabilities are greatly determined by the people around you. We all tend to gravitate toward the middle. If you’re around people slightly better than you at particular task or skill you will get better. If you’re around people who are worse at you at a particular task or skill you will not reach potential.

This is a very important thing to realize when choosing a college or university or even a high school. Who you put yourself around will determine how close you came to come to the full potential you are capable of. If you go to school where things are easy you make a many scholarships but you may never get to be stretched to your full potential.

I personally have been in classes where I was at the absolute top of the class. A few weeks and my teacher told me I didn’t even need to come to class anymore. He gave me an automatic a. Why did well in the class I didn’t learn nearly as much as I would have had the rest of the class and just a little bit better than me.

In another class I had the opposite situation. It seemed that everyone in the class was significantly better than me. The class was very challenging. The first time I tried taking it I dropped out because it was just too far over my head. I did some remedial work and took the class the next semester and this time I was able to pass it or it but, it was still a very very challenging class for me.

However, the experience stretched me mentally much more than the class that I found easy. I had to work very hard in order to get a passing grade and was still barely able to keep up with the average of the class. Still this was an extremely good mental exercise.

Seek out experiences where you are not the best, where you have room to grow and where you’re put into situations where everyone around you is much better.

there was a very innovative experiment in which researchers were given two groups of rats. One group they were told were average rats. The other group they were told had been bred to be geniuses.

Actually the rats were identical. They were just run-of-the-mill regular rats. The real test was for the researchers. As they ran the rats through various experiments and tests to determine their cognitive skill levels, an interesting thing happened. Even though the rats were the same the researchers rated the “smart” rats as performing the tasks better.

Keep in mind there was no difference between the rats. They were all just the same. However the researchers expectations influenced their perception of the rats. And the rats were ranked higher.

In another experiment by similar result was found but this time with school students. Teachers who were told kids were smart consistently gave them better grades and in fact the kids did better. It is very important to understand our expectations. Our expectations shape the world around us. Like spectators and lead to low results. High expectations need to above average results.

People work at all kinds of different levels of productivity. There are some great gains to be made by recognizing how to get yourself into the productive zone. This only different for each person, but is well worth taking the time to understand how to get there.

You can’t fight yourself. Some people are productive early in the morning, others are more productive way tonight. Some people concentrate well with music, other are distracted by even small noises.

Do tasks when they are the easiest for you. Try to understand your body’s natural rhythm and work with that. Different tests may be easier at different times. You may find it easier to work against material early in the morning, and leave more mundane tasks for the afternoon. You may find that certain types of concentration are most productive when you have no chance of interruption such as late at night. And other types of tasks we don’t have any time.

You have to train your brain to keep your mind focused. It requires extreme effort to stay on task. Most people don’t even try. They wonder from thought to thought and eventually make some headway but only a fraction of what they’re capable of.

Productive people are very similar. One of the biggest differentiators is productive people’s ability to stay extremely focused on the task at hand and not let their mind wander.

In the US most banks carry FDIC insurance. Basically the government will guarantee that anyone puts money in that bank can always get it back — even if the bank goes bankrupt.

They are certain limits and stipulations on how much money anyone individual can get back. Usually this limit is $100,000. In a recent financial crisis the limit was temporarily raised to $250,000.

These limits are per person per bank. So you could be FDIC insured for $1 million by putting $100,000 in 10 different banks.

If a bank is bankrupt the government will make sure you get your hundred thousand dollars back. However anything beyond the FDIC insured limit will be divided among the depositors if there is anything left.

The FDIC keeps tabs on banks. If they have concerns, they can inspect the bank’s books, and even force the bank to sell itself to another stronger financial institution. Generally these type of sales occur on a Friday or over the weekend in order to have the bank open for its depositors the next Monday. The FDIC goes to great lengths to minimize the amount of time that people cannot get their money.

Even if you are under the insurance levels, your bank going out of business can cause all sorts of headaches. It’s worthwhile to keep tabs on your financial institutions financial status. You can look at SEC filings, what analysts are saying about the bank, and the bank’s own statements to get a good feel on its financial pulse.

There may be a financial benefit in spreading your money between two banks. If they are diverse in both fairly strong financially, the chances of them both going under at the same time are very small. However you would still have access to your funds from the stronger bank if one of them goes under. We’re only talking about a period of a few days here in most situations, but still it pays not have all of your eggs in one basket.

American Express offers concierge service on its platinum cards and higher. In some situations this can be a good deal. You call or e-mail, get concierge, explain what you want done, and they take care of it for you. They have your credit card number so they can make payments and do things on your behalf.

In actual practice American Express outsources this concert service to a company called circles located in Boston. From what I understand the American Express customer service in other parts of the world is actually handled by American Express representatives and other third party.

Because he urges you get in the US are adequate for some tasks. Unfortunately they are woefully lacking in dealing with international issues by trying to rent a house in Mexico.

Still, they can be a time saver in locating and buying things on the Internet, finding a good restaurant recommendation, or locating different items from around the country and purchasing them for you.

If you’re looking at using the concert service it’s best to give them a try a few times before doing anything important just to make sure you understand how they work. Also be aware that each person who helps you may have a very different level of skill and helpfulness. Some concierges find the product and offer to buy out other simply send you a link. It’s well worth your time to ask specifically for what you want done and even then misunderstandings easily occur. The phone is probably the best way to deal with the American Express concierge service. You can e-mail them, but experience has shown this leads to a great degree of confusion no matter how explicit you try to be in your instructions.

No one likes to fail. The whole point of failure is it is something we want to avoid. But failure can be a good thing. Someone whose life is completely devoid of failure is severely handicapped.

There is a growing trend to try to keep children from experiencing failure in any way shape or form. This is a tragic mistake. A lot of what you learned growing up is how to deal with failure. Whether that failure is failing the test, and getting a lower grade than you expected, not getting chosen for a particular sports team, or losing at the game. These are all very important parts of developing into a mature individual. Kids who have never been given the chance to fail have a horrible time when they experience the real world growth failure is a common occurrence.

Failing early and often is much preferable to carrying on oblivious. It’s much better off for a kid to make a failing grade on a quiz early on in the semester then to fail an entire grade. Of course failing at an entire grade is a thing of the past. Most schools figure it’s too dramatic to fill a kid so they keep pushing them on even if that means they graduate high school without being able to read.

In the coming generations we are going to see a significant difference between kids who graduated from schools that avoided failure in kids who graduated from schools to consider failure part of the learning process. The first group is going to have a very difficult time in the real world while the latter will seem marvelously well adjusted.

Your language can help make you productive. There is a strong correlation between your vocabulary — the language you use — and your ability to think in different ways. In fact much of the curriculum in a typical college education is simply learning vocabulary in your field of study. This deep understanding of the vocabulary gives you the ability to think about your area of study in ways that the average person cannot. This college education in vocabulary gives you the foundational knowledge you need to get an entry-level job in your field.

There’ve been some experiments done to determine how language interacts with thinking. What they found was that people who had names for different situations, objects and characteristics were able to much more quickly identify patterns — even if those names were simply made up.

In some situations you may find a productivity boost by creating a vocabulary around the problems and situations that arise in your work processes. Simply having a name for different types of situations and characteristics can make them quicker to identify which saves you time.

There are two different types of technology users. The first type generally has older technology, older gadgets, and older software area and the second type generally has the most cutting edge, up-to-date device. They have the newest software. They get the new fancy cell phone a week after it comes out is not on the day of its launch.

What often happens is that the first group of people don’t change technology is often because they made a bigger investment in learning to use what they have. The cost of switching to different technology is a great barrier to them. Since they have systems that work with their current devices and software there is no sense changing any more frequently than necessary.

The second group of people use technology for technology’s sake. Their technology is not part of a system or method of doing work. Because of this there is very little pain for them to switch to a new device or new software. They continually upgrade to the newest fad gadget thinking it will solve their productivity problems. In reality their current electronic toys would work just fine, if they were part of a well designed system.

Most of the time expensive oil is seen as a negative. But there are some benefits that occur when oil and gas prices skyrocket. When oil is inexpensive it hard to justify technological investments to make transportation and energy generation more efficient. Expensive oil helps make the high cost of energy research more justifiable or it

Expensive oil also hesitancy to bring manufacturing back into the US. With high oil costs transporting cheap products from China to the US is no longer economically feasible. The high cost of diesel fuel on boats and it’s built in to the price of products and it is less expensive to make the products and sell them locally and import them.

Exorbitant fuel costs also help encourage local food production. The less distance that food has to travel less expensive it is because of the high cost of transportation.

Expensive fuel also helps prevent urban sprawl. When transportation is expensive people tend to live near their jobs and other businesses. Inexpensive transportation makes it more justifiable to buy a house further from the city.

Public transportation offers many benefits to metro area. But when it is extremely inexpensive for individuals to drive it is hard to get the necessary numbers to make it cost effective. High fuel costs and encourage them more use of public transportation — particularly when people cluster around city centers.

High fuel costs and expensive gasoline can also encourage more flexible work arrangements. Telecommuting, four-day work weeks, and flexible hours to avoid traffic are all easier to justify when transportation is very expensive.
