High fuel costs and encourage them more use of public transportation — particularly when people cluster around city centers.

High fuel costs and expensive gasoline can also encourage more flexible work arrangements. Telecommuting, four-day work weeks, and flexible hours to avoid traffic are all easier to justify when transportation is very expensive.
